Hi, anon! Here's my part 2 for yaaa.

1) If I take broadcast and advertising, I can still do journalism in the future if I change my mind? They won't put my concentration on my certificate?

- Yes, you can still do journalism in the future, your concentration won't be stated on your certificate. At least in my time, it won't.

But, a word of caution. You will want to be equipped with all the necessary knowledge and skills when you step into the working world. If you didn't take journ modules and decide to go into the journ field in the future, you might not have the necessary skills equipped. Furthermore, your employers might just look and find out what modules you took while in university and realise you're not "qualified".

So my best advice to you would be, to really know what you want to do. I understand you're not too sure right now, so I think for you to know what you really like to do, you should wait till you enter university. Coz in first year, you get a taste of ALL the different concentrations. In Year 1, all of us had to study introductory modules of different concentrations. So after year 1, you'll probably get an idea of what you like to study and do in the future.

I say, don't worry. Get into uni first, and then get a feel of everything before you can fully make up your mind.

2) I'm more into the creative industry like music/fashion/radio, does it mean I have to do news? I like travel documentaries too.

- Of course you don't have to do news! In fact, I'm just one of the rare few who like to do broadcast news in my cohort.

There are quite a number of people who are into fashion in my school. And a senior of mine was crowned 987FM So you wanna be a DJ competition a few years back, she's currently a full fledged DJ. Kimberly Wang. I dunno if her educational bg in wkwsci helped lah, but radio, yeah we have that.

Documentaries? Yeah we've a module focusing solely on that, so yes! We're great for docus.

But, if you're really into music and fashion, the Art Design and Media (ADM) school could be suited for you. It has a broadcast concentration as well. Wkwsci doesn't focus much at all on the music/fashion broadcast side. It's just that there are a lot of people into the fashion scene in my school.

3) Is the pay really low in the Broadcast Industry?

- I have to say. Communications as a whole, we start off with a lower pay in comparison to other industries out there. So it's not just the broadcast side that we're talking about.

And like every other job, in the long run, I'm sure your pay will rise. But starting pay, don't expect much I must say. So if you're thinking of starting off as a high flyer, it is not the industry to go to.

Then again, nobody starts off as a high flyer. You gotta work hard.

And it's sad lah, coz everyone thinks communications will give you peanuts, coz it's not practical etc etc. Unlike Science and Engineering. But I say, if you've passion, I think you'll definitely get somewhere. Do what you like. Don't think about the pay. If you really like it, I think the pay doesn't matter. Very idealistic, but I choose to submit myself to that idealism.

So.. this question, makes me quite sad. I can rant on a whole post just talking about this hahahaha.

But I get what you mean. The Broadcast side is apparently known to pay peanuts, unless you make it big. Then again, there are plenty of production houses that have sprouted and I think they're NOT earning peanuts. The founder of a production house called Little Red Ants was a Valedictorian of my school quite a while back. And I don't think he's getting nothing. I think he's doing something and carving out a whole business on his own.

I don't know what he's earning but with companies and GOVERNMENT ministries approaching his company to make videos, I do think there's a whole lot going on out there for him.

So really, if you got the passion, it'll take you a long way.

4) I'm considering between Mass Comm and Business.

Yeap, it's a difficult decision. It's the time after JC when you really got to seek within your soul what it is that makes you tick.

For many who haven't decided what it is in life that they would like to do, they choose business. And a lot of people do that simply because they can't decide. What's more, it's a practical choice. Business. Will definitely bring in the money.

Unless you actually LIKE business, to me, that is damn wishy washy and so half-heartedly done.

So IF you know what it is you want to do. The things you like to do, that you know deep within yourself, THEN it's time you choose that path.

Sounds very airy fairy lah, but I say do some soul-searching.

For me, of course I would tell you to pick Mass Comm coz I am inherently bias. Also, I'm the sort who would never do business. I liked econs in JC, but I would never touch another calculator in my life again. The GC calculator that we use hahaha. Big ass bulky piece of thing that blurts out graphs and can also be used to type secret love messages lol lol and then reset right before examinations in case of cheating.

HAHA. I just don't ever want to do maths again lah. Accounts and stuff will never be friends with me. But I can be friends with accountants : )

So yeap! My answers to your queries.

I might have just made you a little more confused by offering other options like ADM school. But I sincerely do hope you find out and know what exactly it is that you like to do. Big decisions like these take time so go easy on yourself, I'm sure it'll all come clear to you soon. At least you know your options and you're seeking clarification. That's a start. But keep going at it and continually refine those options and I'm sure the answer you've been looking for will become as clear as day haha!

For me, it was simpler coz I knew what I wanted to do since I was in secondary school. But I did refine those options however.

When I was sec 3, I thought I was sure I'm gonna be a Straits Times journalist lol. But soon after, it became clearer to me that I'm actually vain and I like TV, so maybe print is not for me, Broadcast is hahaha.

But I'm sure, my direction will get refined one way or another, and the eventual path will not be as expected as I thought it'd be. So, let it flow~ It's hard, even I'm struggling with it. But that's life I guess.

Perhaps talk to your peers and teachers or family. Maybe they'll give you some feedback. Ok, maybe not your parents coz usually they'd want you to do what THEY HOPE you'd do. Unless your parents are liberal about your choices.

For me, I think I was lucky I kinda knew what I wanted but without my brother, I would've made a few wrong turns that wouldn't lead me to where I'd be now. So yeah siblings help too.

ALL THE BEST> Maybe drop me a note to tell me where you decide to go eventually. If you're heading to WKWSCI, PLEASE DO SAY A BIG HELLO TO ME. Don't be shy leh wahlau eh, the last time I appealed for someone to say hi to me and I got nothin in return. NOTHINNNN. Be brave. Afterall, I'll just be a SENIOR in the school HAHAHAHA kidding lah, playing this hierarchy thing.

G'night!
